I always found it useful to see the setup made for some shots to get some insight into the making of images. From time to time I try to do this as well. When shooting the Attack of the shuttles some time back, I had a second camera in reach, so I could do so.

Attack of the shuttles

This is the shot I am talking about. I have been using about 8 packs of badminton shuttles, my sofa – yes, for those knowing the stuff Ikea sells, this is one of those.  Sadly but true, there is a tea stain on it, but I did not manage to get rid of it yet. To get it looking like in motion, I tried to use a shuttle with clay on its head on the racket. I’m not really sure it worked out, but at least I got some people wondering how it was done.

For lighting I used two studio strobes. One with a softbox right next to the camera as the main source. A second strobe with a reflecting umbrella next to it, trying to reduce the shadow on the wall a bit, additional for lighting up the shuttles on the floor. The setup looked like this:

Behind the Scenes: Attack of the shuttles

Using a 17-35 lens had the effect of a fish eye, which I would have preferred to be a bit stronger. Nevertheless I think I would use a lensbaby next time I do a shot like this, using the focus to draw the attention to the racket.

For post-processing I pulled down the exposure, added more contrast and removed some dust spots. Additionally I removed a second tea stain. I think, that was about it…
