Of course, a country is nothing without its people. And we would not be traveling a country, without getting to know them.
During the trip we had the opportunity to join a local guy for showing us around. We where able to visit a school, where we were told that about 10% of those finishing the school in this area of KwaZulu Natal would be able to find a job, whereas the rest of them would be left without a regular income.
For the school kids it seemed to be fun having strangers around. They just had a break and some of them where cleaning up, while other where just fooling around. Thinking about their future, its a sad perspective. But seeing them running around, laughing and having fun, it seems to be a childhood like everywhere else.
We also went to an orphanage and a place for AIDS infected children, which was kind of a weird place to be. I am not religious myself, and it is always strange meeting people having such a string believe in the church. And trying to talk about Condoms for protection was helpless. Definitely not my kind of people…
Later on, after having seen the local hospital as well, we paid a visit to a family living there. It is kind of interesting seeing the old fashion round huts being so much cooler and with a nice climate inside, in contrast to our way of building houses. I doubt, any larger city could be build like that, but for them, it is the best option. No need for anything like an air conditioning…
It is always better having some local guy with you. For one hand, he would be able to talk to the natives, and for the other hand he might be trusted more.
More to come…
