In many online communities, one can read allot of ranting against the performance of Aperture 3. I have been quite satisfied with it until now. But since Apple released the update for the RAW conversion, my system performance sucks… actually, there is no performance, as it rejects to output any file. Fact is, as soon as I try to save an edited RAW file from my EOS 1Ds Mark III (approximately 25 Meg) with edits like Dodge, Edge Sharpen, Vibrancy, Skin Smoothing, edited Curves and some Enhancements as a 800×800 maxed JPEG, the system will never finish. Saving the same as original sized JPEG, it finishes after about 90 seconds.
Interestingly enough, when trying to retouch the same image, after having all the editing applied, as soon as I use the retouch tool, the screen goes black except for the just applied spots. They turn white. Then it will run for another 2-5 minutes, until it will reshow the image with the retouch applied.
Looking at my system setup, its an iMac with a 3.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8 GB of Ram, booted in 64bit mode. Should be sufficient. Additionally, faces and localization are turned off.
As of these Problems, I took a look at my CPU temperature realizing it goes way beyond the 90°C, more or less almost to 100°C during these operations. Furthermore, analyzing the system information for Aperture, the outcome is: 24266253 context switches, 36 threads and 2 1/2 hours of CPU time.
I’ve never thought that I would ever think of Apple not to invest into testing and not taking a so called “pro application” serious, but I must admit, that I am a bit disappointed. Do I really need to use another utility for resizing my images for the net? Do I really have to use a whole day for just correcting a view spots I missed in the beginning?
Aperture 3 lets you get to work faster.
Already downloaded the trial version of Capture One. But that one does not support the kind of editing I did in Aperture. Lightroom has been a candidate as well, but the user interface is still not as good as with Aperture… Hard times arising… Lets see what time brings…
By the way, if anybody would be interested in a comparison, I do have a Project containing just one image. Download this and try to export the image with a maximum extension of 800×800 pixels. I would be really interested in your feedback. For download klick here: PerformanceTest.aplibrary.zip (31MB). Please do not forget to add information about your Mac, the boot Mode (64bit or 32 bit), the Version of Aperture you are using and of course the time it took like that:
iMac 3.1 GHz, 8GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130
Running 64bit
Aperture 3.0.3, Camera Raw 3.0.2 Build 5270000.1
Runtime: did not finish within 3h
Lets see how many people are able to process this file. Thanks in advance.
